The extreme bulk of corn yields are determined by weather specifically in the reproductive and post-reproductive phase. A light influence comes from planting date. Weather during the vegetative growth stage is of little actual yield influence.
With this in mind the next few weeks ahead are the main focus for Brazil's large second crop of corn. The bulk of this crop pollinates in early April historically.
Mato Grosso is responsible for about half of the big second corn crop. Mato Grosso do Sul, Goias and Parana are the secondary states. The current weather forecast, still showing consistent below normal moisture ahead for these areas, is something to monitor.
Though weather at the vegetative growth stage is not too important we can't ignore the fact the prior two months were dry. We are headed into pollination with little soil moisture for a backup. Over the prior eight weeks rains were -40% from normal in Mato Grosso, -40% from normal in Goias, -42% from normal in Mato Grosso do Sul and -32% from normal in Parana.
